Games and Activities for Language Learning in OpenSim: Principles for Project-based Learning
This presentation gives an overview of how project-based learning principles can guide the design and development of games and activities to supplement language learning in OpenSIM. The presentation arises from the EU funded GUINEVERE project on games in immersived environments.

Starting from a focus on project-based language teaching (PBLT) this presentation investigates a vision of language education for the digital age in which learners and instructors have the opportunity to integrate a range of skills in addition to those associated with traditional forms of language instruction such as learning vocabulary and grammar or working on fluency, accuracy and complexity. This vision is outlined in relation to a two-year EU project called GUINEVERE (Games Used IN Engaging Virtual Environments for Real-time language Education) that investigates the potential of digital game-based learning in 3D immersive environments focusing on foreign language learning (2017-2019). OpenSim is one of three platforms used in the project, alongside Minecraft and Second Life to provide a variety of games for students in the different languages of the project partners (English, German, Italian, Turkish). The project explores how game-based learning and virtual learning environments may be used as digital tools to develop collaborative and creative learning environments. As the project approaches the interim period, this paper provides an overview of its activities and planned Intellectual Outputs (IOs). This approach has been defined more broadly as project-based learning in the general sense, as it incorporates multiple rather than single unconnected tasks, or technology-mediated project-based language teaching (TMPBLT), as it identifies a key role for collaborative digital technologies in the process. In this presentation we are also positioning this idea in relation to what we are calling ‘post-language studies’, as the approach enables teachers and learners to integrate a range of lifelong learning skills such as technical skills, digital literacy skills, intercultural communication and project management, alongside a traditional focus on linguistic competencies normally identified with language learning. Thus, the paper aims to articulate a vision of language learning that moves the discipline from the margins of the school or university curriculum to one that is at the centre of an interdisciplinary or theme-based approach to learning. All of the virtual world islands provide playgrounds for young learners where they can explore a variety of collaborative and individual games. The project provides a critical overview of the key research literature in the field and explores some of its objectives (to identify guidelines for teachers on how to use immersive tools with their students; a needs analysis addressed to teachers and students from the partner countries; field tests on immersive games; and the creation of a new mobile application for playing immersive games for language learning).

GUINEVERE, Games, and Let the fun of learning a language begin!
The GUINEVERE Project (Games Used IN Engaging Virtual Environments for Real-time language Education, 2017-2019) aims to demonstrate the potential of digital game-based learning in 3D immersive environments in order to improve teaching. Now half way through the project life-time a major part of the development includes a literature review on gamification and game design, developing guidelines for language teachers, documentation on categorization games and of course: games parks in the virtual worlds of OpenSim, Second Life and Minecraft to explore quests, mini-games, role-play scenarios and much more for our ongoing field tests with learners. This panel is proud to present the mid term result and is looking forward to outline the field test and pilot teacher training courses which will be part of the final outcome of year two.

This presentation gives an overview of how project-based learning principles can guide the design and development of games and activities to supplement language learning in OpenSIM. The presentation arises from the EU funded GUINEVERE project on games in immersived environments.

How can we show the passage of time in history builds?
OpenSim is great for developing history builds that give a view of a environment at a particular point in time. However, builders may also wish to understand and convey how a particular environment has evolved across multiple timepoints. Accordingly, this presentation discusses possible approaches to representing the passage of time in history builds taking as its subject the iconic early railway stations at Liverpool Crown Street and Lime Street.

Storytelling Tools: Historical Immersion in a Modern Store Region
Storytelling is an excellent way to engage visitors in a historical region that doubles as a shop for both historical and modern items. One example, Opensimulator, offers a built-in parcel system and parcel streaming audio - both of which can be used to tell a story while setting the historical areas apart from the store. Shop items can help retain the immersion of the historical setting for teaching or entertainment while allowing visitors to enjoy shopping within a story. Another example, Sinespace, makes use of a powerful quest system to immerse the visitor in a story. This system is somewhat different than Opensimulator and requires some creativity in achieving similar success in engagement and sales. My presentation encourages creators to use virtual worlds in unique ways; whether to set up a region in Opensimulator or to see beyond the obstacles in a different virtual platform.

CHALLENGING GOLIATH: Bringing Virtual Reality into Higher Education
Challenged to set a vision for technology usage and to create a community within 100% online graduate programs at SUNY/Empire State College, several faculty members began working in 2006 within the college’s Second Life islands. In 2013, the college instituted the Master of Arts in Learning and Emerging Technology (MALET) program, however, the institutional support for the Second Life islands was dwindling. Fortunately, the cost-effectiveness and rapidity of development of open-simulator virtual-reality (VR) environments, came to the rescue. Chronicling the growing use of VR environments, we will highlight how these environments have served for meetings, shared experiences, learning development, and community building. We also created an elective course on VR development and over 30 students have created their own immersive VR learning environments; several students will note their work. This semester, the MALET program piloted its first immersive residency on our own VR islands focusing on the topics of augmented and virtual realities, reinforced by the immersive nature of the very conference itself. Furthermore, since spring 2018, we have initiated a progressive, ongoing think-tank about the vision and the challenges facing the integration of true emerging technologies into learning environments, countering the often narrowly focused educational technology programs.
